will soup fill you up for longer than solids if they were the same calories?

if you ate like...i dunno a plate of veg and potato and it was 200 calories vs the same meal made into a soup-exact same ingredients (except some stock/water to thin it down/make it less claggy) and it was also 200 calories which would fill u up more/for longer?

what are your experiences?

do you have any recipes?

usually yes, but it all depends. sometimes a plate of steamed broccoli or cauliflower can make me really full, especially if i boil it until soggy, mash it up, and pour in a tiny bit of broth. i usually can't finish that. anything carby will usually not help my satiety much, i could eat a whole loaf of bread and still be hungry. i avoid useless solids like those because they don't help me feel satisfied at all. soup is a staple of mine as well, all day long and it keeps me very full, even more so if you have any sort of delayed emptying. the liquid fills up quickly but gravity will aid digestion unlike solid foods which can sit and rot and bloat. i add miracle noodles to my soup too, especially the rice because i tend to feel really full after that. konjac root is a fiber that keeps you full, it comes in capsules and it does help you feel full after almost anything since it expands in the stomach.

thsnk you evryone i thinkil be having soup tonight!

Amaranth, that recipe looks good, thanks. i super adore butternut squash do u think swapping the carrots for squash would be ok? would it up the calories tho?

Soup is my staple. I make this 85-calorie carrot soup which is very easy to make, and it doesn't need some of the more fattening parts of it. It is so filling, revitalizing. Ah I think I will start a pot soon of soup.

i'm sure it will be VERY delicious i wish i had the means to go shopping for some.

1 cup of cubed carrots has 53 calories, 1 cup of cubed winter butternut squash has 82.

the caloric difference won't be very much, but you could likely eliminate the onion (because onion is sweet and so is squash) in order to help dissolve the gap. also, you may not even need that much of the squash (as i believe the recipe calls for 6 cups?) because of the difference in texture. for broth, i only use hot water, cayenne and celery salt anyway (bullion cubes are only 5 calories though)

embarrassing....i'm poor. i didn't receive any financial aid this year because i filed too late-- i didn't know if i would be able to go to school so i didn't file and i didn't have any proof of homelessness (i was, but it's okay now)

i usually get a basket of produce from the co-op but i haven't because the person who brings me it is upset because i couldn't attend her daughter's memorial.

sorry to distract from the intention of the thread

I live on soup, really.

It seems to me that you can get more soup for the calories, and it's generally a warm/hot meal which really helps me feel full. And, I've noticed, it's not a "bad" full feeling like you get with solids, so you're full, but also comfortable (or at least more so) with the feeling (instead of having these lumps stuffing you).

My favorite soup is an egg and onion soup.

Ingredients - 1 cup chicken broth, 1 egg, 2 stalks of green onion

80-90 calories, depending on ingredients

1. Get the broth heating on the stove.

2. Chop up the onion and toss it in.

3. Scramble the egg.

4. When the broth is boiling, slowly pour the egg in, stirring slowly with a four until it solidifies (strands, clumps, whatever); make sure it's thoroughly cooked, and you're done.

I make vegan soups with low-sodium vegetable broth, vegetables, beans. It helps if you have an immersion blender.

I don't like canned soups because most of them are too high in sodium.

It fills me up more. because there's extra liquid. That's why I thin out my personal soups a lot more. May taste more bland, but it's warm and filling.

I have to say that solid food fills me up more than soups. Soups give a nice full 'I've eaten lots but it doesn't matter coz it's mainly water' feeling. But It doesn't last long for me. Solids r more satisfying and keep me full for longer.

I have a basic, low cal, cheap, flexible soup recipe that I turn to all the time. I made it up, u can use what ever meat u want (or leave it out). And any veg u want.

So get a chicken breast or fairly tender steak (rump?) and chop it in to thin bite size slices. Marinate it with a bit of honey, soy, garlic, and pepper. I mix the marinade in a separate cup first in case I stuff up the ratios. Just guess the amounts.

Chop whatever veg u want to use into small even bite size pieces. Making them all the same size is very satisfying. Perhaps I'd use onion, carrot, celery (leaves and all), cabbage, corn, green beans or whatever u want.

Put them into a stock pot and fry them lightly to colour it SLIGHTLY coz it adds flavour OR u can skip this step tho and just chuck the veg into a stock pot with water, this is no dramas. Cook it til u r happy with the veg (I like maybe 25 mins?). Get the marinated meat and put it into the hot water. No frying here

I add a dash of soy, honey and garlic into the water at this stage. As much or as little as u want. I cook the meat for just long enough to b done. This keeps it tender and moist. Chicken takes literally a minute or two. Just cut the meat open to c if it's cooked. I love this recipe coz it's so flexible, healthy, cheap and can use whatever I have in the fridge.

Another simple soup recipe-
Fry some left over curry paste (from the jar) off in the bottom of a stock pot. Add water to this and some veg, whatever u want. Cook this til ur happy with the veg and add a can of coconut cream or milk.

Don't b scared of the cals. Over a few serves its not that much, plus it's so yummy and good for u. Once that's heated up put seafood (or whatever u want) into it. I use fish cut into pieces OR (my fav) scallops. They will b done in a minute or two.

Hope these were ok and understandable. X
