Thank you for posting this! I've even found myself fat-shaming sometimes and I feel awful about it but sometimes I can't help it. But those are all things that I try to think when I think something bad about someone who's overweight/obese. You're cool for posting this.

I really wish some people would consider these things.

I'm a recovered anorexic who now, from a variety of factors including medication and trauma, is overweight. not terribly so but still quite far from my days even as a healthy thin person.

I can be quite cruel to myself and the nice comments here are comforting

But what is 'Fat Shaming'?

I don't think saying someone who has a BMI of over 25 is overweight is 'fat shaming', as it's statistically true.

I agree people shouldn't be insulted just for the sake of it. But this is a problem, as we don't know what will insult. Everything could insult someone.

I think there's a danger to free speech by adding the term 'shaming' to something.

If a conversation on a topic is sensitive to the subject, I don't see it as 'shaming'.

I see overuse of the word 'shaming' as potentially a way of closing the possibility of discussion on an issue.

It would be good if the thread creator could say what she means by 'fat shaming'.
Far shamming: people being picked on purely because they are perceived as fat or overweight, or people saying straight out that they hate fat people purely because of their weight.

Never be hard on yourself for recovery or taking necessary meds. After all weight is just a number that relates to how much gravity pulls us onto the earth. Try not to measure yourself by it <3

+ people should be able to eat what they want if it makes them happy. if they accept themselves and are happy with themselves, fat is not a bad thing.

Yes i agree my mother was obese my whole life until she decided enough was enough. She is 54yrs old 5'5 and almost 120lbs(she lost about 160lbs). My sister is obese and just last summer lost about 80lbs. She has a way to go but yes they know what they look like. They see magazines, the movie stars, and what media deems as beautiful they know. Depression can cause weight gain. Not every obese person is depressed but my mom and sister were about thier weight.

it only becomes a bad thing if it endangers their health

Also I don't think it was mentioned in the original post so: being physically disabled makes it difficult to lose weight! It makes it difficult to exercise a lot of the time; it makes it difficult to have the energy to eat "good" foods that take time to prepare vs just eating what's easy (and many illnesses make eating fresh veg and fruit nearly impossible!!). Medications cause weight gain--and like, the "it's only 10-15 lbs" thing is BS, especially when you're on a ton of medications???
Like fatphobia is hella ableist in addition to being shitty in general.
I agree. I have a serious heart problem, inflammatory conditions and extreme fatigue. Some of medication makes me very tired too. I still work full time though which also exhausts me.

What is fat shaming?
'An act of bullying, singling out, discriminating, or making fun of a fat person. The shaming may be performed under the guise of helping the person who is overweight/obese realize they need to lose weight or they will die, become ill, and/or never succeed in life or relationships. Fat shaming is an individual bias against people who are considered unattractive, stupid, lazy, or lacking self control.'

Maybe half the problem is using words such as 'fat' and 'skinny' - which aren't medical terms.

Someone can 'have' fat - yes. But to say someone 'is' fat - yes I can see why that would offend.

We should probably only tell someone our views on their weight if they ask us what we think. In that case, if someone was overweight and they asked me what I thought, I'd tell them I thought they were overweight.

I agree there should be no shaming. But It's wrong to say 'we all need to remember' - as many of us here don't shame overweight people.

I didn't mean that in a bad way! I was congratulating them! That's a huge feat! Depression causes so many health problems ( not just obseity), I know, I suffer myself! I'm sorry if offended anyone. You do not to respond so harshly next time, re read my post:/ do you really think I would respond to your mother and sister in a judgmental manner??? For real? Especially with an ED....
