Thinking about using sugar free candy as an additional way to keep bowels empty..anyone else do this? I hate feeling bloated and constipated. Does it really work? I currently am eating a sugar free lifesaver..4 = 30 calories & 1 serving. does 1 serving do the trick or do you have to eat more for it to really work as a laxative? Appreciate advice, thanks! Do some sugar free candies work more powerfully than others? such a sad thread haha. I do so much to avoid bloating and have struggled with constipation since I was like 2. I eat very healthy already and drink lots of water. desperate...

So called "sugar-free" gums and candies contain sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol etc). These compounds are not metabolized as glucose but they have extra hydroxyl groups which pull water into the lumen of the colon. Anything that pulls water into the lumen of the colon causes diarrhea (liquid stool). There is no weight loss effect in terms of using these items as laxatives. The constant diarrhea causes loss of bowel tone which leads to dependence which can result in bloating and constipation.

In my experience, they do have a laxative effect.. I used to eat quite a few sugar free Lifesavers and usually caused some diarrhea. However, it also caused gas and bloating, which was uncomfortable. I eventually gave them up. I wasn't using them for that purpose, just wanted to eat something. I started chewing gum instead. I only used certain kinds of lax when it was really necessary (previously had abused them)
