I know the health risks that come with purging and am terrified of hurting myself. Here are some things I've found that help.
Mouth - Rinse your mouth out with baking soda and water afterwards to combat the acidity of your vomit. Do NOT brush your teeth right away. This will strip away your enamel while it is in a weakened state and damage your beautiful smile. If you are worried about the smell, just pop a breath mint or a stick of gum (sugar free).
Hydrate - Always be sure to drink lots of water

(but not too much or you'll just feel nauseous again)
Electrolytes - Replenish your electrolytes after purging. You can do this with a Gatorade, electrolyte supplements, or a healthy snack. I prefer the snack option because it it helps you feel full again and won't have all the guilt-inducing calories and sugar you find in sports drinks. If you do choose to snack afterwards, plan out exactly what and how much you'll eat before purging that way you will not be tempted to binge again. Here are some things I like:
- Calcium: Milk, almonds, kale, broccoli, beans, yogurt
- Magnesium: spinach, chard, almonds, beans, yogurt
- Potassium: Banana, spinach, beans, chard, yogurt
- Salt
Sticking to leafy greens is usually a good bet, they are rich in nutrition and low in calories, and its hard to overeat them. Avoid sweet things (even fruit) and carbs because those just make you more hungry.
Other Stuff - "Purging is only really effective for getting rid of calories within the first hour after eating. The simpler the carbs the faster they digest, and the more complex ones are often not so fattening that they are worth purging" I find that reminding myself of this helps me make excuses not to purge and limit the urge. In the end, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is limit the frequency.
I hope this helps,
Stay safe!
