Does anyone have any experience with the "Diva cup" or menstrual cups?

like the title says, have you ever tried a diva cup? looks like this

obviously there's loads more menstrual cups out there. does anyone like these? have any experiences? tips? they say this is healthier for you, obviously costs a LOT less than buying tampons forever, better for the environment, etc. i'm mainly interested in them because i plan on hiking the Appalachian Trail in a year and i need a period solution rather than carry a backpack full of tampons (i'll be out there six months). i have tried these...

but it hurt really bad and it was hard to get out. i'm wondering of the diva cup will be just as bad. the ring around the supposed "softcup" is very hard and didn't feel good. i tried doing it a couple times. i'm probably not doing it right but it was so hard to get out that i panicked a little. i got these just to see what it would be like cause it's similar to the diva cup, but i'm hoping the diva cup will be softer and better.

so! opinions please!

I have the diva cup and it is awesome! I wish that I had started using it years ago!

The diva cup would be easier to get out than the soft cup which by the looks of it, doesn't have a tab or stick on the bottom. The diva has a silicone tab thing so you can grab it and pull the cup down and then grab the bottom of the cup to remove it. It's good because you dont feel like you have to stick your whole hand inside your vagina to get it out. It did take me a few goes to get it right but it is comfortable to wear for long periods. The diva also sells two sizes so you could go with the smaller size and it might be more comfortable than the soft cup which looks kind of big.

yeah, for the soft cup you seriously feel like your whole hand is in your vagina lol it seriously sucks. i had a super hard time getting it out and i got all panicky which makes it even harder... i've heard that other brands besides the diva cup are softer though? have you tried anything else?

Nope, I started with the diva because it was the only one at my local store but it worked so well I haven't needed to try anything else. I've read that the Luna cup is good too. So some research on reviews on Amazon or google to get an idea of the differences to see which cup you should try and read about troubleshooting too.

Before I started hrt I used a divacup. Best decision moving from tampons for many of the reasons you listed. I still wore liners because I was paranoid about leakage but that only happened when I was sleeping and even then it was just a few spots. Half the time you won't even feel it's there (honestly) . They're really easy to insert and take out as well (once you get the hang of it), not to mention not having to worry about hanging tampon strings while wearing a bikini. Much less risk of tss. 10/10 from me.

Size guide: http://divacup.com/how-it-works/sizing/

I wore liners with my mooncup for my first period with them, but I only leaked when I left it in too long on the first day. Three years and I haven't had any issues since, just remember the stems can be cut off if it's uncomfortable.

They're definitely worth the investment

I've tried using a moon cup. It's not been plain sailing. Sometimes I can't get it in *at all*. Once or twice I've managed to get it in, but I'm very aware of it. I could feel it whenever I moved. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. I mean, I am a virgin so maybe that explains why I'm having trouble with it, but there again lots of young teenagers who are virgins use it fine. 11 year olds use them for gods sake. I really want to use one though - partly for environmental reasons but also because I don't want to pay for tampons and pads each month - I'd rather use that money for other things.

I guess I'll just have to keep practicing.

I use the mooncup and I love it. It works so much better than tampons for me and I love that it helps reduce waste and stuff.

I've never had any issues getting it in or out, but my friend who has never had sex with a man and is a very anxious person has never been able to get hers in. I think your anxiety level plays a huge part in it though to be honest. If you're nervous or stressed, everything tenses up

I'm a bit late to this thread but wanted to comment because I've been using the Diva Cup for 4 or 5 years and consider myself pretty experienced, haha.

The Diva Cup is definitely not the softest cup out there. With some googling I found this page which might help you find the softest cup: http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/2721470.html

The thing with menstrual cups is that everyone's vagina is very, very different. I have a friend who's simply too tight to use tampons at all, let alone a menstrual cup, meanwhile there's me who can use the Diva Cup with no pain whatsoever. You might have to go through a couple of cups to find one that works for you, but if you experienced pain I would start with the softest cup you can find and move up from there. The way that you insert and remove your menstrual cup can also effect how much pain it causes you, do you mind me asking which fold you used to put it in? This is a good chart to show the different folds: http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/453392.html ...I personally use the C-Fold but that's not the easiest one at all, just the one that takes the least effort lol.

Also, keep in mind that generally, the softer the cup, the harder it will be to seal (increases the chance of leakage). It's good that you're trying to find a cup that works for you so far in advance, as it does take a while to get used to.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me! Menstrual cups seriously changed my life and I definitely consider myself pretty knowledgable on the topic lol.

I bought one months ago but it leaks everytime I try to use it. Would love to make it work though because I hear they're awesome.
Hey! This is totally advice that you didn't ask for lol but hopefully this might help. There are quite a few reasons that your menstrual cup might leak, the most common being that you aren't sealing it properly. Once you put it in, run your finger along the curve of the cup to make sure that it seems fully "inflated" - it should be round and smooth. Try running your finger gently along the rim - you shouldn't be able to get your finger inbetween the cup and your vagina at all. If your cup hasn't sealed properly, you'll need to take it out and try to put it in again.

Another thing to think about is the size of your cup. Theoretically, there should be a cup that will work with every average vagina. If you find that your menstrual cup leaks, an option for you would be to find a firmer cup. The softer the cup, the more comfortable it is but the harder it is to seal, and for firmer, vice versa, so if you found that your cup leaked but wasn't painful to put in you might want to try looking up brands that are firmer than the Diva Cup (this is a good link but I found it in 3 seconds so I'm sure you could find more info: http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/453392.html). Also, keep in mind that the Diva Cup has two sizes, I believe, so you may want to do some research into whether you need the smaller or larger size. The larger size is marketed towards women who have had children, I believe, but if you have a larger vagina it may work for you as well.

Another thing to think about is the shape of your vagina. Vaginas are angled, but angles can vary and you'll need to find which one works for you. To do this, think about the way you angle a tampon when you're putting it in, and try to mimic that when you put in your Diva Cup.

Also, you can try different folds. The fold that works perfectly for me might cause your cup to leak. Try this link, but again, I'm sure you could find more info elsewhere too: http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/453392.html

Yeah, anyway, you've probably tried all of this but I just wanted to give you some ideas. Sorry for the essay, I just REALLY REALLY like Diva Cups lmao! I hope you can make it work for you :)

Sorry I'm replying to literally every comment lol, hope I'm not spamming.

Have you tried looking into a smaller / softer cup? That might make it easier for you, if you can feel your cup when you move it may either be too firm or too large for your vagina. You can also try to play around with different folds when putting in your cup to see if they make a difference with how it feels / how easily you can insert it.

I think you're right hun, I probably need a smaller model. But I'm a little reluctant to spend £30 on another one that I might not be able to use anyway. I've only tried to use this one for three or four cycles though, maybe I just need to give it more of a chance.

I started with the same soft cups that you have pictured, they were ok, but I didn't like how I would keep having to buy them and cary them with me. So I got a diva cup, pretty expensive $20-$40 and it says to buy a new one every year, but I clean mine with antibacterial soap before, during and after my period each time.

I don't feel it unless I have bad cramps, but otherwise I cant feel it at all, it's soft, easy to get in and out, but I would say read them over, better environmentally, better travel, and in the box they include a little travel baggie for it and they recommend a soap by the same company, but if you use anti-bacterial soap you'll be just fine.

It's soft all around, I've had mine for about 2 years and when I insert it properly and empty it every 6 hours on my heavy days I never leak.

For me it took a few months to get the routine down, leaking also stopped after the first few periods so if yours is leaking you could just not be inserting it right. nowadays I just kinda shove it in there though and it seems to settle into place without any effort XD

so if you're going on a hike I would recommend starting to use it at least one or two cycles to get used to it before your departure! Definitely recommend it tho.

The disposable cups don't really make sense to me bc like half the point of Teh Cup is to cut down on waste?? (for me anyway)

I tried the diva cup earlier this year and I just couldn't get it to work. After reading online I read that if you're really young and not sexually active that you might have a hard time using a diva cup because they tend to be larger than the other brands.

Anyway, I tried it so many times and I think I even asked for advice on here before. Every time I would try it, I'd just end up laying on the bathroom floor for like 30 minutes trying to shove a cup up there and I'd just end up laughing at myself because I felt and probably looked ridiculous. Everyone has talked about how amazing they are but I just really don't think it's for me. I've tried standing and laying in so many positions. I've tried different folds and lube and handosfkamjfhe I never got it to work. I did get it in ONCE and it felt like it was vacuuming my insides out and then it took me like ten minutes to get it out.

Also, if I'm in a public bathroom how am I supposed to empty it out and clean it? Just walk out to the public sink in front of everyone with bloody hands????? I'm just kind of unsure about them. It really doesn't feel like the best option for travel unless you want to maybe bring cleaning wipes with you??

AND people say it feels like they're not wearing it? I can't imagine not feeling it. I don't think I'm abnormally small down there, but I don't know why the heck I'm having such a hard time with it while everyone else seems to be so in love with cups.

I have been using a Diva Cup exclusively for about 4 years now. I really like it! I am a virgin and I did have a tiny bit of discomfort putting it in at first, mostly because I wasn't used to it, but now I don't have a problem. I sometimes have a little bit of leaking, but I've been getting better at sealing it against my cervix so it doesn't leak.

My vagina hates tampons

Let alone a diva cup

I have wipes made specifically for the cup and they're a good solution if you can't access a sink (sometimes I use handicapped bathrooms tho & I've also memorized where all the bathroom stalls that happen to have sinks are on my campus XD) and tbh sometimes if I have no other solution I just wipe it with toilet paper and wash it properly when I get home. If you're in the wilderness like OP you can use the wipes or a cleaning solution and rinse with a bit of water.

I guess it just doesn't suit everyone, but trust me, if I felt anything wearing it I would have gone back to tampons!

It grosses me out tbh. Like I don't want to reuse something down there. I'm probably being ridiculous idk like what do you do when you pull it out? Wash it in the sink? Naa. I'd probably faint of the gross blood and hit my head on the washing machine as I did with my belly button piercing.. Not for me!
