Cold Baths to Burn Calories… Have You Tried It? (Anorexics and Bulimics Should Answer)

Last night I was so disgusted in how I looked. I had b/p three (maybe four?) times that night. I had gotten most of it up but I realized how awful I look. So for the first time ever, I decided to take a cold bath to burn calories. It was pretty awful. I had to slowly submerge myself into it and I was shaking so bad and convulsing. I watched the American Dad episode where Stan has anorexia to trigger myself while I was in there. I managed to wash my hair and body but didn't accomplish much else. I didn't stay in very long because I was too weak… Has anybody else tried this? How have they handled it? Oh, quick bonus question: Ice Breakers Duos, I've been eating them but they are 5 calories each and I'm worried I'll lose track of how many I have and underestimate my caloric intake… Should I purge them? Sorry this is kind of a bulimic question too

Oh that episode.... Haha.

They do burn a bit more calories than your BMR, but that's only if you stay in there while you're shivering and tremoring- that's when your body works to maintain it's temperature. If you're not shivering don't count the minutes as burning calories.

Personally I think it's stupid- you can exercise for the same amount of time and burn the same if not more calories plus suppress your appetite and speed your metabolism up a little bit for the rest of the day by exercising. So just run for twenty minutes in place until you're sweating and you'd be better off. Besides muscle burns more calories sooooo

lowering your body temperature would make your body work harder to keep your body at a normal healthy temperature. depending on your weight you could burn up to 200 calories per degree your body has to warm itself up. so yes it would burn calories, however, you probably shouldn't do it too long or too cold if you are weak because you could get hypothermia.

I also sometimes do mints to not eat so much, I have tic-tacs and they are about 1.5-2.5 per little mint,

when I worry about eating too many I put allotted amounts into baggies, usually one for each hour I am up,

17 hours 25.5 - 42.5 calories, if I write the calories on the baggie I usually eat less than what's in the bag.

I hope some of this helps.

I used to have ice cold baths every other day when i was anorexic- again because i found out apparently the sudden change in temperature increases your metabolism. I dont think it makes a difference.

I've almost finished a nutrition degree now, and yeah no literally cold showers/baths arent going to help you lose weight. To be honest it'll make things worse for anorexics because it makes you more prone to catching illnesses/ makes your circulation worse. Weight loss is simple, less calories in, more calories out = weight loss.

It's not entirely "simple".

There are some people who can't eat enough Calories (and thus go into crazy metabolism meltdown), and there are people who eat too much. Not because they "want to", it's just how their brain/thoughts work; cravings and desires to restrict are very, very hard to control.

If it WERE easy, everyone would be of healthy weight.

I use o do this quite often and I have thought about doing it again. Although I did give myself mild hypothermia, I was in the starting stages of hypothermia, like my hands hurt and could barely move, my brain wasn't working properly and I couldn't think straight. I was also very very cold so I took a hot shower and it took about 30 - 45minutes before my hands were working normally again.

I remember doing this when things were "really bad" and yeah i mean its not like there is any exact amount or way to know how much you lost if you know what i mean? i wouldnt rely on it. I would recommend working out instead.

Ive actually read that shivering could burn around 100 calories in 15 minutes. The muscles secrete a hormone called irisin that stimulates heat production from white and brown fat cells stored in the body which is pretty damn cool if you ask me. Just imagine instead of going to the gym and working out you could just sit in a freezing bath while watching your fav tv show. I dont even know man

When I was 14 (now 18) that was my religion lol. Cold baths were my go to if I couldnt work out as much as I felt i could but what I did was put on an hour playlist and stay in there and walk in place and jump up and down (I had tub mats to steady myself). It also helped to maintain my lowest weight when I was in the hospital until they figured out, then my mom had to monitor my showers ): Very embarassing.
