Calorie absorption

When you binge food with carbohydrates/sugar, how much of it you think is already sucked up by your body before you purge? Lets say your binge lasts for 30 minutes and you purge right afterwards.

Probably very little. According to this page your stomach has a 'lag time' where it empties very slowly - so the 20-30 minutes of binging should mean that it's more or less completely still in your stomach. Most food will have been digested in two hours, up to six depending on the food (though not likely with carbs).

Remember that nothing gets 'sucked up', calories are only absorbed once they reach your small intestine. So anything in your stomach is essentially reversible/purgable until it passes out of the stomach into the small intestine and everything that's sat in the toilet bowl is not contributing calories to your body.

This is why I find it hilarious when counsellors/doctors try to convince me that like half the cals are already absorbed as soon as the food practically enters my mouth
Like why tf u lying tho

It's ridiculous, calories aren't like little creatures that sprint to turn into fat on your body. They're energy from a real thing which is not currently in my body. Remind me again why I'm losing instead of gaining on the thousands of calories I eat multiple times a day? :p

Right??
I mean I'm sure they're intentions are good (I.e. trying to get us to stop b/p'ing because you know...its bad for you) but like I can smell that bullshit a mile away

Well, how is then possible to save a person with diabetes who havent eaten for a while so the insuline taken have forced the blood sugar level dangerly low, and the person is comatosed. First aid in these situation is to put a piece of chocolate/sugar in her/his mouth under the tongue because the sugars go straight to the blood diffusing through mucous membrane.

Another example, after working out and the blood sugar is very low and i feel Dizzy I drink sportdrinks or eat a banana and feel better about 5-10 minutes. Some of the sugar is already in my blood BEFORE the banana have left my stomach...

So that is why I ask. It is true that some of the calories in a binge is already "sucked up" by Your body before you have the chance to purge. But I am not sure HOW MUCH, and I thought maybe some of you have experienced to purge all the Food but still feel like Your energylevel is higher than before the binge and maybe also do not loose the amount of weight you have calculated.

None really. Your stomach is not able to absorb calories. If it was, you would have a hole in your stomach instantly. The only job for the stomach is to make the food absorbable for the small intestines. Now you can absorb calories in your mouth- technically when you swallow the saliva. Since it's already broken down, it's let through the intestines more quickly.

You asked when the calories were absorbed, not when the sugars and other chemicals were. Not everything occurs in the same place.

For gods sake you were linked to scientific proof. At least take a biology class before you try to argue a point.

I am not arguing, I try to figure out what people in here have experienced because the "Scientific proofs" not always match the experiences people with ED have.

Also, I asked when the carbohydrates/sugars were absorbed, and as far as I know sugars are also calories. So, take that biology class yourself and wait till youre in a better mood before replying.

I`m quite sure sugar dissolves and digests within less than 30 mins.

Depending on what other things you ate before. I`d say even with a "solid base" of veggies/ice cream sugar gets digested in ~5-10 mins. I mean, as OP said, sportdrinks, cereal bars and such contain a lot of sugar because i gets digested really fast. It also makes the digestion of fat and protein quicker, which is why after a work out some have these dextrose + protein shakes to build up mass...

But high-fiber and protein take longer I guess. That`s why they usually make you feel full longer. And fat seems to be somewhere in the middle.

She gave you an answer to a question you were asking so if you don't like the answer or want to argue then why even ask in the first place?
It's as simple as this if you throw it up then the calories are not absorbed you can go up to two hours without purging and if the food still comes up then you didn't digest any of it. If you want a more elaborate answer then do some research and stop asking us as if we are all doctors.

Gosh, some people in here are tender  All I was asking for was YOUR experienses with bingeing food rich in sugars, but still not losing the amount of weight you thought youll do even when purging effectively. Science and experience doesnt always match.

Thank to those who replied based on your experienses, that was all I was asking for.

In my own experience, basically all my binges are super sugary foods, I rarely have savoury binges cause I'm always craving sweets lol. I purge everything, or mostly everything anyways(I.e. I keep going til I hit stomach acids and my weight is back to or below my morning weight) and I'm 5'3" and 78.5 pounds. So basically, if you get it all out of your stomach within the time gastric emptying takes(~3 hours on average) nothing is absorbed.

Not a scientist, may be wrong. But afaik certain nutrients can be absorbed through membrane in the mouth. One of them is glucose. There are these things called glucose transporters which are present in most cells including in the membrane of the mouth. They facilitate the transport of glucose in mammals. That's why the glucose under the tongue thing works. Glucose is a simple sugar and contains around 4 calories per gram-so fairly negligible and those calories are probably used to store or convert the glucose anyway. However the majority of calories and nutrients from food (things like fatty and amino acids) are absorbed in the small intestine (which involves it being broken down in the stomach-hence anything you purge out of your stomach isn't contributing to weight gain.)

Couple of studies I found on glucose transporters in the oral cavity:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10430550

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9269300

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9572913

Unfortunately when I search for more information on calorie absorption is comes up with mostly ED websites which aren't really the best source. I'll keep looking though.
