So I have a question. I have already been diagnosed with anorexia (I see an ED dr) but are you still considered anorexia if you don't have the 17.5 bmi anymore? I know I had it to begin with but as of this morning on my scale it said 102. I'm 5ft3 2 which means it's 18.1. Obviously to my dr and and everyone I am anorexic but are you still considered anorexic without that bmi? My dr says I'm really underweight and honestly I don't know what her scale says(it's one of those special ones they use for ED people)

It's really weird in the US and goes by state but here in canada it's purely viewed as a mental illness so if you are anorexic you are anorexic regardless of your weight. Same with bulimia, ednos, orthorexia... Etc. You're only a recovering anorexic if you're actually recovering so like even if you were overweight but were being anorexic you'd be diagnosed as that. I think that's how it should be everywhere cause that's one of the reasons people don't get help soon enough because "they don't deserve it yet" cause they're not "real anorexics yet".

...
EDNOS is where you've got the mental part going on and varying behaviors, but you're not underweight. Bulimia is where you've got the mental part going on and you're whatever weight and you purge. Anorexia is where you've got the mental part going on and you're underweight and you restrict. They are all equally as serious as one another, but they're just different diagnostics.

It's not that EDNOS "doesn't deserve help" or "they're not real anorexics yet" at all - that's totally not it. They just have a different diagnosis and so they receive treatment in a different way.

In answer to the original post, 17.5 BMI is considered underweight. So is 18.1, but only just barely. 18.5 and up is normal, so you're not quite weight restored yet.

The 17.5 requirement is gone. It's now just underweight, which is suggested to be anything under an 18.5 bmi.

Even if you get past 18.5 you'll still be considered anorexic.
Actually, according to the DSM V, it's not. I think it's really stupid, but they have a BMI "severity scale," now
