i was put off of reading this when you said 'puke' (i hate that word) but i still power through

Ipecac may work, but it is an utter nightmare. For 1 it tastes absolutely disgusting, like so vile to the point where even the thought of it is enough to make me gag. It also makes u feel like shit before, during, and after it makes u purge, and I mean makes you. Before u feel like u have the worst stomach pains like ur going to die cause ur stomach is melting. During, it is the most violent vomiting I've experienced. It's uncontrollable and I ended up projecting all over myself and my bathroom, clean up was not fun. After, you feel so drained and gross. You don't feel that sense of emptiness and satisfaction like other purges. I've taken ipecac 3 times in my life, which were years apart and I took when I was desperate. I regret each experience.
Moral of the story: don't do emetics, it's not worth it I promise.
Yes, it is vile stuff. I've never vomited so violently in my life.

10 years ago when I first heard about ipecac, I watched a video on youtube where this guy “pranked” his gf with it by putting it in her drink and he was laughing while recording her violently hurling and it was horrible

I've lost count how many times ipecac almost killed me.

Thinking about it and I get goosebumps and feel like I'm about to vomit.

That stuff is violent! I'm not kidding at all. It's powerful and will eventually kill you.

Please everyone, stay away from it.

what is the safest alternative to ipecac? Is salt water and mustard water really as dangerous? I'm worried that if people avoid these emetics, they might try to use even less safe methos or products to try to induce vomiting. I personally have trouble purging, requiring me to drink extreme amounts of water and excessively rinse. I am in so much pain, as I think I might have some type of hernia or ulcer, but I have not been diagnosed with either of these things despite multiple endoscopies. I have limited purge frequency, but still would appreciate any tips of how I can do so without having to drink as much water or rinse, since I'm worried about water poisoning/electrolyte imbalance too. And no, I'm not HF--not even close. I don;t want to be, but I just want to be safe as possible for the few times a month I do end purging...

Ok, so. Out of those of us who purge, the majority do it via puking (as opposed to lax abuse or exercise). And a lot of us (myself included) have probably considered, if not actually tried, using ipecac or some other form of emetic. However, because ipecac is bottled and is commonly used for medical purposes (i.e. if someone has been poisoned) there is a common stigma that it's safe, or at least safer than purging, right? Here are the facts about emetics.

An emetic is any substance that when ingested will induce vomiting. Saltwater and mustard water are very common. Ipecac is a form of emetic.

These are extremely dangerous. When using a substance like this, it will force vomiting. This means that the actual action is much more violent, and is much more likely to cause problems, such as a tear in the stomach lining, esophagus rupture, and problems with the heart and lungs. This on it's own, is reason enough to not use an emetic, right?

If that isn't enough for some of you to stay far away from emetics, here's where it gets even more dangerous. These substances induce vomiting by forcing your body to completely empty the contents of your stomach, involuntarily. You will vomit until the vomit is done. So, say you're purging with your hands, and you see blood. You can immediately stop triggering the gag reflex and call 911. However, if you are using an emetic to purge, and see blood in your vomit, YOU. CAN. NOT. STOP. You will continue to vomit, regardless of how you try to stop. When this happens with the use of an emetic, it is nearly always fatal. It's not a fun way to go either.

Now, let's say you use ipecac and survive purging. Well, your stomach is now empty. Completely empty. Acid included. This may cause the stomach walls to grind together, which can cause excruciating abdominal cramps.

So, for your own safety, please, please, if you are going to purge, just use your fingers (or purge hands-free if you are able)
Please do not even risk it. One purge is not worth risking your life.

Ipecac (and I believe other emetics like CS as well) is actually even more dangerous than you've described here. While all of the vomiting-related dangers you have described are one thing, chronic use of emetics can also lead to muscle wasting due to build up of the toxin emetine - since your heart is basically one big muscle, this means that chronic use of emetics can lead to irreversible heart damage and congestive heart failure.

EDIT 2: In reference to non-ipecac emetics (i.e. salt water or mustard):
"Sometimes, these remedies did cause vomiting. But they often caused problems of their own. For example, too much salt caused sodium poisoning, seizures and even death. Gagging someone often caused throat bleeding and swelling. Also, these home remedies were never reliable enough to be used to treat poisoning. And complicated charts about what remedy went with what poisoning were confusing."
I might have to though, cause I can't use my hands. I wish I was pure ana, but I just can't stop eating. Lax works, but it doesn't prevent fat gain. I need to get clean somehow.

No. Just absolutely don't. This stuff almost killed me many times! It's violent as hell. Plus it tastes like nail polish remover.
It is 100% not worth it. I KNOW that desperation feeling but even at your most desperate, even if you DOUBLE your most desperate, this is still not worth it.

Imagine swollowing a live bomb that explodes inside you over and over until you are begging it to stop or foe you to just die already. That's what it's like. It's been at least 15-18 yrs since I last had it and I now have heart damage and I still feel physically sick just thinking about it.

Thanks, they actually don't sell it in my country. I'll try mustard water, it should be safer.

rereading this to remind myself. my grandma has old ipepac syrup in her house 😅

"Ipecac killed Karen Carpenter. Stay away." absolutely. one big misconception about Karen is she died from soley anorexia. a lot of people use her death to leverage the dangers of EDs arguments. they dont do their research and dont realize it was Ipecac that killed her. Ipecac is a direct cardio toxin. AKA the medicine has direct effects on the heart.
saying Karen died purely from anorexia is like saying; someone that did drugs to deal with cancer, the drugs killed them but they "died from cancer." simply not true.

stay away from Ipecac. EDs are dangerous enough.
