I'm bulimic. I fast for 15 hours a day, then I binge and purge once at night. I'm gaining weight, then I lose it, then gain it again. So basically maintaining. I'm not asking for tips at all. I just want someone to explain the science behind it. I don't understand how some of you are losing all this weight, and I'm just stuck. Thanks in advance for your responses. :)

Yeah I just maintain as well, honestly I think that the people who lose weight with bulimia are only doing it like once every few days and are starving on their off days. Thats what im guessing..... I get gain weight ;/

Yeah, you're probably not purging it all.

When I was younger, I just purged until my stomach stopped hurting or until there weren't huge chunks.

Now I make sure to heave until nothing comes out. It's painful and shaky, but you lose weight that way. You also have to exercise a lot.

Honestly, people are saying that it's the whole calorie thing, but I always purged until I couldn't anymore and still maintained. I'm in recovery now, and the way my dietitian explained it to me was that your body slows down your metabolism so much that you end up burning fewer calories at rest and your bowel movements only happen about once a week because your body is using almost all of the food that goes into it. Basically, your body is trying to protect itself by holding onto everything it can and making you save up energy.

Also remember that no matter how much you're losing, this disorder is still detrimental and fatal. You do not have to be losing weight to be killing yourself.

I have a question.. Why is it that if you purge it all up, you'll weigh less than before your binge? Is it lost water or something?

I'm not bulimic, though I purge when I get forced to eat and I purge it all up. I just stumbled across this thread and decided maybe this was an okay way to ask instead of making an entire new topic. Thanks guys.

It's stomach acid and other liquids being purged out. Your body needs those. Try to have a Gatorade (or at least water) to stay hydrated and repair electrolytes.

idk but i only ever manage to maintain too :/ but its because i dont purge everything. each day i try and tell myself im going to have a normal day and eat a normal amount and not purge, so sometimes i do manage to have some meals that arent overboard and i keep those in, and then when i binge its like massive impulsive 4000 calorie binges and regardless how much i try to purge i guess enough of it gets digested for me to not lose anything..

I do the same thing (b/p once a day and fast the rest of the time) and this is how I've kost the majority of my weight.

I would say it depends on how fast you purge (I personally binge for no longer than 30 minutes then purge) and also how much you're able to get up, do you get it all up?

And are you making sure you are getting enough water? If I don't watch my water intake I will retain water and my weight won't budge

I was hoping that you wouldn't ask.. LOL because it actually depends for me o.o I didn't want to elaborate too much and write a long a$$ post.

So normally, a b/p happens to me in the eve or in the afternoon and throughout the day I would have been drinking or eating a little. So before the binge occurs, I still have a bit of undigested food/liquids in my stomach that will probably come up with the purge. Your stomach also has its normal fluids that come up with the purge too (the acid and bile and all that good stuff). Of course you might think conservatively and think.. "well can't you just purge up to exactly the weight before you binge and call that even?" unfortunately that idea doesn't settle well in my mind. For instance, I could have been eating green salad during the day which has weight but after it gets digested, it'll become mostly poop and very little calories. My binge foods tend to be more calorie rich.. like chocolate or ice cream. We all know that when we purge, sometimes the foods get mixed up in our stomach and the foods do not come out in the reverse order that you consumed. So... if the salad comes out, but the chocolate stays in, I'm screwed. So I'd rather get everything out.

However, there are times when I start to binge on a pure empty stomach.. say the first thing in the morning on a Sunday. In that case, my weight at the end of the purge is actually really close to my weight before the binge because I had started binging at an empty stomach.. plus I'm a bit dehydrated from my sleep.

I binge for about an hour, but I eat slowly because I'm a weirdo. It takes me about fifteen minutes to purge. I'm pretty dehydrated, so I guess it could be water retention. How much weight have you lost?

I was bulimic for five years. I didn't lose a fucking ounce. I actually gained some weight. I also became very unhealthy because I'd fast for 20 hours and then instinctively binge on crap food. Bulimia is bad news. Then fucked up my digestive track from lax abuse. I'm actually alot healthier with anorexia (like being under weight) than I was with bulimia.

That could be the problem, food starts digesting as soon as you eat it so after an hour a good portion could already be digested. But I'm just guessing

I went from around 140 to 120 doing this

I lost most of the time.
Ive just lost 50lbs in 2 months due to bulimia and I b/p almost everyday on thousands of calories.

But I never keep anything down. I fast or b/p and go to the gym about 5 times a week.

But I have episoes where I fast one day, then b/p,then fast and so on. Or sometimes I fast for about 3 days and b/p on the fourth.
