Hydroxyzine Causes Weight Gain - Be Careful of this Med

Have been feeling very hungry lately. It's because of the Hydroxyzine prescribed for anxiety. Wanting to share this with you all.

It increases the appetite.

I did not know that...I only take it as needed though, max 20 mg. May I ask what your dosage is?
My dosage is 25 mgs. It makes me hungry and I eat more. Used to be 5 mg and did not have this effect but I had not swung back to high restricting when I was at 5 mg. Plus, I read one piece of info that it caused one woman to gain 56 pounds. So, not worth the risk. I don't want to take benzos for anxiety and Buspar makes me sick. So .. dunno

I don't take it that often so I'm probably fine but I think I'll start tracking it and see if I eat more on days when I take it

I've been on several different meds that made me gain weight before and I don't want to risk it (one made me gain 35 pounds in like, 2 months, another made me gain 45 pounds over a year or so. I've been off the second one for seven months and I've lost 40 pounds of it but still frustrating). It sucks when meds are supposed to help you mentally and then the weight gain screws with you mentally.

I like the last sentence in your post a lot. It sums up how I feel exactly. Like the doc knows I have BED and he knows that Hydroxyzine might cause weight gain so why prescribe it? He's a complete Fucktard. It is sometimes hard to attribute a change in appetite/weight to medication too.

I'd just like to say we should probably be wary of posting things like this, as this can deter folks from trying a med that may really benefit them.
Side effects also vary person to person, so what you experience may not be the same for everyone else.
This is a really good point and I want to let you all know that even though my meds made me gain weight, they literally saved my life. It really sucked battling the weight gain but I needed those meds at the time and if you need to be on meds that make you gain weight, that's okay, and please communicate your concerns to your doctor. When the first med made me rapidly gain weight, I told my doctor and she put me on a med that helped counteract it and made me lose the weight. There are options and at the end of the day, necessary medicine is more important than your weight. I don't regret being on those meds.

One wasn't zyprexa by any chance, was it? That's probably the worst one ever in terms of weight gain, crazy shit.

It's frustrating when people think their doctors are idiots or "fucktards" because they don't have the perfect miracle cure for their patients.

Just for future reference, most meds that treat anxiety have a potential to cause weight gain in some Patients. Base on your situation, the small risk of increased appetite might r a better alternative than other meds that have other problematic side effects or are dangerous to you in any way.

Oh god they tried to push that one on me so much when I was hospitalized
Same ha. Unfortunately I was there involuntarily so they could force it. I later learned that they had me on twice the maximum recommended dose... kind of scary! I don't even remember the majority of that hospitalization, in part because I was usually knocked out by meds haha.

Agreed. In my opinion a good doctor should educate their patients about the potential side effects of a new medication, but if they don't then it's a good idea to either ask them or research the medication on your own and make a decision.

They got me to agree to it (only took it for a week before I said fuck it) by making all these claims about how it's shown to be very effective for treating anorexia - it turns out there was only one study done on this, and zyprexa wasn't shown to be very effective at all - most of the patients in the study stopped taking it, and for those who stayed on it it didn't really help to reduce disordered thinking, just increased their appetite lol.

I mean, trust your doc and take your meds bc maybe they will help. People on the internet who report side effects could be misattributing or just fucking crazy pants. Also your ED is just trying to get in your head rn. If you experience weight gain that freaks you out tell your doc you want to try something else....at worst it’s not like you can’t lose it, right?

Yup it was! That was the 35 pounds in 2 months. But being on it made me not suicidal for the first time in years so 🤷‍♂️ it also got me out of the hospital like 3 months early because of how well it worked. I wish they could get rid of the weight gain side effect bc tbh none of my new meds have ever worked as well.

The thing is, at some point you run out of medications to try, and with some meds you literally can't lose the weight while you're on them. On one med I was exercising intensely every day and eating super healthily and I gave up because I somehow gained weight. In some ways it helped the ED because I could eat somewhat normally knowing I had to accept the lack of control over my weight? But it was still really frustrating. It was really risky to switch me to another med but I was lucky and found a doctor comfortable to do it, not everybody has that luck.

Also like, to everyone saying you should just take the med...it really is hard to be on a med that makes you gain tons of weight rapidly. It's depressing as hell. It's valid to be angry about having to experience this and to want to tell people our experiences so maybe they won't have to go through we did, maybe they can find a better med. Not everyone will gain weight on these meds but it's something to be aware of.

Talk to your doctor and don't be afraid to let them know you are not okay with weight gain. If they're a good doctor they should know that it's their job to reduce side effects, especially ones that can increase the depression they're supposed to treat.

I so wish they could get rid of the weight gain side effect in atypical antipsychotics. I gain on all of them, even Abilify which is supposed to be weight neutral. Instead I end up taking Haldol and we can't up the dose enough because my eyeballs start doing very weird things...

I definitely agree there are some meds that are like that and it’s a nightmare for our thinking. Don’t take those! Lol. I worked really hard with my psychiatrist to find weight neutral options that worked for me and it took years and a lot of trial and error. I also had to be willing to try meds that may have side effects....experience them, and then tell my doctor it wasn’t working out. That part sucks. Hang in there. I obviously still struggle with mental health but I found my mix that really helps and if you stick to it you and your doc will find what works. It’s something I’m oddly optimistic about because it helped me so much....that or it’s just the meds

uhhh I've been on hydroxizine for almost a year and if anything it decreased my appetite in the beginning, and now that i'm used to it it kinda has little to no effect on my appetite.
the therapist that prescribed me it warned me about LOSS of appetite, too.
