My metabolism has fucking skyrocketed since going back to work so now I’m feeling Actual Hunger Signals which is turning me into an irritable bitch because my mood is constantly on edge from the psychological distress of eating and feeling hungry.
Yeah it’s better than having a TDEE of like 1300 but fuck hunger signals 😑
good news is I stopped counting calories (congrats to me on harm reduction and keeping myself alive). I’m focusing on eating enough so I have energy at work. I won’t weigh myself unless my body starts to feel different and I know any weight gain will be muscle anyways because your dude is over here lifting branches and hauling plants 🌱 for six hours a day
Also I tried smoking weed (I’ve only had edibles in the past) and liked it much better than edibles. I’m considering trying it again because I’ve heard it can help with IBS. Any recommendations for strains/dosages/types of cannabis? I’m looking for something short and fast acting. It’s legal recreationally where I am btw

Look at terpenes. I'm not sure what the V stands for but THC-V works for my gut issues and also if Durban is in the name. Those are for gut. Now for my head to be screwed on somewhat right where I can tolerate other humans, bring on Indica, 80% THC vape ( my OCD won't let me f*ck with flower) or above, and if the name includes haze its my friend. 😂 Hope this helps. I ♥ weed!

It's strange that you heard that smoking weed can help with IBS: all the research I’ve seen + my own experience actually suggests the opposite.

Marijuana does elevate hunger levels, but it also slows down gut mobility. It causes your stomach-emptying process to temporarily "pause" and also slows the migrating motor complex (MMC) of the intestines which is crucial for digestion and nutrient absorption. This is why when people smoke at night and eat, they feel “heavy” in the stomach in the morning.

Now, this is dangerous because it can throw your gut into dysbiosis: unbalancing your system. This can lead to a lot of problems, and for me, it caused SIBO. I was using marijuana to increase my appetite and decrease guilt for eating my dinner, and the food would sit in my intestine for longer than necessary as I slept. This allowed it to ferment and soon, I had an overgrowth of methagonen bacteria in my small intestine which led to the diagnosis of methane SIBO.

Yes, bacteria are essential for the gut microbiome but you’re not supposed to have any in your small intestine! These nasty little f*ckers basically “stole” the nutrients from the foods I ate (leading to anemia and vitamin deficiency), caused bloating, and most scary of all, actually increased the caloric absorption from my foods. Some foods like fiber, specific carbs, etc. aren’t digestible by human cells but the bacteria were able to: meaning that I was getting more calories than normal from specific foods.

I am a lot better now thanks to treatment and a strict herbal regimen, but my doctor believes it was my marijuana use at night to help me eat that caused it in the first place. So while marijuana is useful for increasing appetite and decreasing guilt, please please please be careful!

Fr fr: I'm just trying to make sure no one else gets nasty effects like SIBO because it truly sucks! I wish someone had warned me back then. When I do smoke now, it's usually on an empty or only semi-full stomach. For digestion help, I:
  • Chew or add raw ginger slices to tea after meals
  • Put a hot water bottle next to my stomach while lying down
  • Supplement with herbs like allicin, neem, and ashwaghanda

Looks like you’re really tuning into what your body needs lately, which is a huge win, especially when it comes to food and energy. Props for ditching the calorie counting and focusing on staying strong at work.

Since you’re thinking of trying cannabis again and want something more targeted, maybe take a look at Alternaleaf, a medical cannabis clinic in the UK. They focus on medical cannabis and the feedback there gives a good sense of how people manage stuff like IBS, anxiety, and appetite issues
