Or pet owners in general.
Anyone else get super protective and anxious about their pet's weight??

I feed my dog a high end brand kibble and a couple treats (often fruits or veggies) a day. I'm extremely controlling if anyone else (including my spouse) tries to give her anything. It's to a point where I won't go on holidays or anywhere for an extended period of time without her. I have 0 trust that anyone in my life will take care of her nutritionally.

This is how I know I have an ED and this is why I don't have children.
Anyone have similar experiences?

same! it doesn't help that my dog has legit allergies and sensitivities either, and is a picky eater to boot; i spend more money and time each day cooking for him, checking his values, exercising him, than i do literally anything else. i also feel contagious? like, am i the reason he doesn't like food?? better go check and make sure he's not underweight again lol cook him some fish

I just adapt my dogs diet to what they eat throughout the day. One of my dogs can't have much people food but the other has a mutt stomach so he can literally eat just about anything and be ok. If they get table scraps, I don't feed as much food during their regular meals. They also get vitamins (the sensitive one takes an "allergy immunity"; the mutt is old and takes a joint supplement) so I take that into consideration because they need 2-3 a day (probably about 20-30 cals) since they're large dogs. I also give them raw organ meat and bones from the cattle we buy so, on those days, they might not get as much food.
Same with my cats. If they got a bunch of treats, I will give them less of their regular food at mealtimes.

I refuse to have an overweight or underweight pet. That's abuse. I am a veterinary technician and you wouldn't believe how many obese pets there are nowadays. It's fucking sad

awww what a good pet momma <3 one of my dogs got cancer a few years back and I completely changed his diet. He only got dog food to make sure he was still getting all the necessary nutrients. Other than that, he got mainly eggs from our neighbors chickens and fresh caught fish. I'd make a slurry in my blender to "hide" raw veggies like broccoli and brussel sprouts. If I didn't have fresh fish, I'd buy the most disgusting canned fish for him and he absolutely LOVED them. I'd gag the whole time but I'd do it forever and ever if I could have him back. It's the best feeling in the world to properly take care of an animal

I've heard so many horror stories!! And I've grown up around family that have consistently had overweight animals. They lived miserably short lives. It makes me sick.
I feel like I'm constantly stressed about my girl's weight. She's a sharpei who I feel like are more prone to weight gain than some other breeds. Like you said, I refuse to own an overweight dog!!

I have a cat so maybe not that helpful, but I feed my cat so much. He doesn't like canned food or wet food at all, and loves kibble. He eats like every 2 hours. He's not obese or anything, but he's chubby for sure. His bowl always had food and it's kinda therapeutic for me to feed him when i'm starving. I don't know if thats bad

Yes! My cat is starting to get into the upper end of a healthy weight and I'm upset because I don't want it to be fat. Before my vet worked with me to get appropriate portions for my cat, I was underfeeding my cat. And I couldn't see that my cat was underweight because of my dysmorphia. I felt so, so, so guilty. Cat foods should really list the calories more clearly.
Omg so true! It seems like there isn't a whole lot of information about animal nutrition, and even specific breeds and their ideal weights. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough tho lol

if he's overweight and your vet tell you he needs to lose, just continue what you're doing but reduce the amount you're giving. Even if it's just a little bit each time, it adds up. And it's not abnormal for cats to want a bunch of small meals throughout the day, especially when they're eating dry

all pet food containers SHOULD have the amount to feed per lb/kg. Most should also list calories but I've seen on some cans, it'll just say "feed 1 can per weight". Also the websites for pet food companies will have nutrition info and calories listed. If they don't, I wouldn't trust the brand and find another food

Edited: also wanted to add that the amounts are for intact animals, which burn more energy. If you pet is spayed or neutered, you want to feed just a little less than what the bag recommends
