I saw someone around these parts recommend mono dieting on chicken breast in order to spare lean muscle mass. While that probably works, do not try mono-ing for more than a day or two on a very low fat/high protein food. Why, you ask? There's this lovely phenomenon known as rabbit starvation, which is a form of protein poisoning. The liver of a healthy person can only handle about 250 g of protein or about 1000 calories from protein, if you want to look at it that way.
From Wikipedia:
Rabbit starvation, also referred to as protein poisoning or mal de caribou, is a form of acute malnutrition caused by excess consumption of any lean meat (e.g., rabbit) coupled with a lack of other sources of nutrients usually in combination with other stressors, such as severe cold or dry environment. Symptoms include diarrhea, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure and heart rate, and a vague discomfort and hunger (very similar to a food craving) that can only be satisfied by consumption of fat or carbohydrates.
So be careful! Choose your foods wisely. While the whole idea of mono dieting is based on induced malnutrition, just be aware of more severe side effects of some mono choices.
