1200 Calories...Is It Considered "Restricting"?

So I guess I've decided to start trying to stay around 1200 calories a day, give or take. I was just wondering if anyone has had success with that plan. The only workout I really plan on doing is just walking at a decent pace several times a week.

How many calories can you realistically burn when walking? If any of you have ever tried this before, how long did it take for you to lose weight? At what point was it noticeable?

I'm just hoping it won't actually take that long. I want to kick myself for not starting this sooner. I would've had a lot less to lose. ☹😢

1,200 is typically a healthy calorie limit when dieting.

My step counter says I burn ~100 calories when I walk for around 26 minutes, if that point of reference helps out.

Weight loss will take a while, but it will be worth it. Others around me notice my weight loss much more than I do.

I can burn 800-1000cal walking depending on my heart rate in 3-3.5hrs (20k steps, all at once/no breaks.) According to fitbit.

I lost my first 100lbs just by taking walks daily (10k steps [4.5 miles in ~1.5hrs] no breaks) and switching to a vegan diet. I didn’t count calories or anything.

It took me about a year to lose the 100lbs (8-10lbs/month.) Going slow def helped me maintain. I noticed my clothes fitting differently around the 30lb mark. You can definitely do it c:

1200 is absolutely restricting. 2000 is the average amount a person eats in a day. I dont have like a good number for whats "healthy" or anything, but 1200 is definitely going into the slow down ur metabolism area. like do what you gotta do man, no judgement. none of us are here bc we're doing mentally well. if 1200 is where ur at thats just where ur at, but its definitely not a "normal amount of calories for a diet".

as for exercise I use to lose 100 calories an hour on the recumbent bike and 69 calories in 7-8 minutes on ellipticals (those machines bring out nine-tailed fox demon energy in me) I think burning 100 calories on a 26 minute walk is a reasonable expectation

hope this helps and try to stay sane out there lol

No one agrees on what that term means on this site and there has long been a super unhealthy competition over who eats the least calories per day. Try not to get caught up in that- if you are kosing weight at 1200 and find you can maintain it, then do that.
Its worth noting, i think, that some very thin people on this site got and stay underweight while eating 1100 to 1300 cals a day for years: also that non ed people consider 1200 the strictest possible diet.

find out your BMR

my BMI is high so my BMR is high. I can eat 1500 calories a day and still lose weight with just walking. Of course I have to choose healthier food tho! Low fat, lean meats, veggies, etc.
and plenty of water to keep pushing fluids!

That is absolutely restricting. I lost down to BMI 15 eating 1200 a day. I would have kept losing had reactive eating not kicked in after a year. I lost my period after a few months and starting losing my hair toward the end of that year.

Yes, 1200 calories is restricting and you will lose weight. I have achieved my lowest weights doing 1200 calories a day. I actually find losing weight on 1200 calories easier. If I restrict too low, I find myself increasing the possibility of binging. 1200 calories is low enough to lose weight without making me feel super deprived.
